The Little Mermaid

The live action Little Mermaid is the remake of the 1989 Disney classic, inspired by the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The film, directed by Rob Marshall and starring Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy, is set in the 1830s on a fictitious Caribbean island and surrounding waters. Ariel is a rebellious and curious mermaid who falls in love with Prince Eric, a human who lives on land. In order to meet him, she agrees to exchange her voice with the witch Ursula, who has evil plans for the kingdom of King Triton.

The live action Little Mermaid is a film that tries to be faithful to the original cartoon, re-proposing the most famous songs and the most iconic scenes, but also to update it with a greater attention to diversity and inclusion. The choice of Halle Bailey as Ariel has aroused much controversy among the more traditionalist fans, but the actress proves to be up to her role, giving a magnetic and charismatic performance. The other actors are also well chosen and fall into the characters with ease and fun. Javier Bardem is a severe but affectionate King Triton, Melissa McCarthy is a mean and ironic Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King is a sweet and courageous Eric.

The film is also a visual spectacle, thanks to the scenography and costumes with attention to the smallest details, and to the special effects that make the sea creatures believable and fascinating. Rob Marshall's choreography is engaging and dynamic, especially in the musical scenes where the characters sing and dance. The director manages to balance well the comic and romantic moments with the more dramatic and adventurous ones.

The live action Little Mermaid is a film that will appeal to children and those nostalgic for the cartoon, but also to those who want to discover a new version of a timeless story. The film conveys positive messages about the importance of following your dreams, respecting differences and fighting for what you love. It is a film that celebrates the beauty of the sea and the magic of love.
