The Mother

The Mother is an action thriller film that tells the story of an unnamed woman (Jennifer Lopez), a trained assassin in the military who comes out of hiding to protect her daughter Zoe (Lucy Paez) whom she abandoned at birth and get rid of a group of dangerous men. The film is directed by Niki Caro, the director of Girl with a Pearl Earring and Mulan, and written by Misha Green, Andrea Berloff and Peter Craig.

The film is presented as a tribute to courageous and combative mothers who do not give up in the face of difficulties and who are willing to do anything for their children. Jennifer Lopez plays the role of a ruthless but loving mother with grit and charisma, who tries to make up for lost time with her daughter and to teach her how to defend herself from a cruel world. The Latin American star also demonstrates a remarkable physical shape and a good athletic preparation, performing numerous action and combat scenes.

However, the film fails to fully convince, due to a trivial and predictable plot, which recycles clichés and situations already seen in other films of the genre, such as Hannah, Salt, Commando, Nikita, Jason Bourne and Taken. The film offers nothing original or surprising, limiting itself to following a linear and obvious narrative scheme, without delving into the characters or their motivations. The film is therefore weak and derivative, unable to involve the viewer or to create tension and suspense.

In conclusion, The Mother is a Netflix film that can be watched without too many pretensions, but which does not leave its mark on the memory. It is a mediocre and forgettable product, which wastes Jennifer Lopez's talent and charisma in a story that has already been seen and heard. The film may appeal to action and thriller lovers, but it does not meet the expectations of those looking for something more original and innovative.
